In proposing a toast to this historic victory in a meeting with staff at the Embassy, Ambassador Maria Laose thanked all members of the team who have worked very hard and played a gentlemanly game with great focus, dedication, artistry and patriotism, thus making Nigeria the proud Champion of African Football once again after 19 years of setbacks.
According to her, Nigerias victory was even sweeter coinciding with the 50th Anniversary of the African Union (AU), making it historic and remarkable.
The Super Eagles won the trophy by edging out ambitious Burkina Faso in an epoch final played in Johannesburg, South Africa.
Ambassador Laose also congratulated Burkina Faso for the boldness and tenacity displayed by the team. She noted that at the tail end, the tournament looked like an all ECOWAS Championship league as the four finalists were all from the ECOWAS. She therefore congratulated ECOWAS as a sub-region for that unusual feat.
